Tour Overview

This is one of the best outdoor things to do near Përmet. You kayak a calm, clear stretch of the Vjosa, one of the last wild rivers in Europe and now a national park, with green mountains on both sides.

Is it good for beginners? Yes. You start at the kayaking center in Përmet, take a short minibus ride upstream, and get a full safety briefing with a life jacket, helmet and paddle. The route mixes gentle rapids with calm water, and there are stops for swimming, cliff jumping and photos. It lasts about three hours and suits ages 18 to 80.

What is included? A certified guide, all the kayaking gear, the transfer from the center to the start, and a photo package at the end. It is an easy half-day from Përmet in southern Albania.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kayak or packraft?

Both are available — the operator decides on the day based on river state, group composition and gear. Packrafts are wider and more stable for first-timers; sit-on-top kayaks are faster and more responsive.

Do I need kayaking experience?

Helpful but not required. The 20-minute on-land briefing covers paddle basics and the lead guide stays with the group throughout. If you have kayaked on flat water before, you will be fine.

Will I fall in?

Probably at least once if you are a new paddler. The river is forgiving, the wetsuit keeps you warm, and the safety kayaker is right there to help you back in.

How does this compare to the rafting trip?

Rafting is a shared boat with two guides — a passive seat. Kayak or packraft is your own boat with full paddle work — active. Same river, same Class II–III rapids, much more involvement.

How long on the water?

About 2.5 hours of paddling. Total on-site time including briefing and equipment fitting is around 3 hours; door-to-door from Përmet is about 4 hours.

What is the minimum age?

14 for the solo kayak or packraft. For younger family members, book the Vjosa rafting trip from Gjirokastra, where 12+ ride in the shared boat.

Is the "Blue Eye" gorge the same as the Saranda Blue Eye?

No — different sites. The Saranda Blue Eye is a freshwater spring near Saranda. The Vjosa “Blue Eye” is a turquoise gorge on the river near Përmet. Both are named for the colour of the water.

Which season is best?

April–June for the strongest rapids and most exciting paddling; July–October for warmer water and calmer conditions with longer swim sections.
